Luke 2:49 - Order Is Key

Step 1: Pray. Select.

As I began praying this morning, I thought about who Jesus was before he entered his ministry. I couldn’t help but notice that I hadn’t spent too much time in my past studies focusing on his childhood traits, which eventually formed him into the man we know so famously today.

I began reading Luke 2, which helped me follow Jesus’s journey from birth onward. In Luke 2:49, the Holy Spirit prompted me to soak in the wisdom of a young Jesus. This is where I began my practice today.

Step 2: Write. Read. Circle

Luke 2:49 - And He said to them, “Why did you seek Me? Did you not know that I must be about My Father’s business?”

After reading the scripture three times, the following words stood out amongst the others:

  • Seek Me

  • I Am About My Father’s Business

Step 3: Re-Write

With a focus on the words that stood out, here is the personalized sentence placed upon my heart. Don’t forget, if you are doing this alongside me today, to add your name to your unique sentence:

  • Jennifer, seek me, I am about my Father’s Business.

Step 4: Visualize

The Holy Spirit is telling me to ingrain and intimately know the ways of our Father; we must first go back and look at the journey of Jesus. We need to connect the dots before his ministry is launched to map the path to becoming the Messiah.

In Luke 2:49, a clear picture is painted of Jesus’s independence and deep understanding of who his primary family is. In his definitive mind, his primary family is not earthly but spiritual.

While he knows this, he still has to obey his parents, become a carpenter, and be a brother to his siblings. In other words, he still had to walk out the full human experience wearing many roles and hats before people understood who he was. The great I AM.

As I think about the personalized sentence for this morning, “Seek me, I am about my Father’s business,” the maturity level it took to make this declaration at such a young age is astonishing. He is clear and concise. He is not rude, just factual. If Jesus was innately always about his Father’s business, then let’s not forget to also take some lessons modeled by the young boy Jesus.

As I read the full chapter of Luke, the Holy Spirit asks me to think further about Luke 2:46-47 and focus on how Jesus communicated.

46 After three days they found him in the temple courts, sitting among the teachers, listening to them and asking them questions. 47 Everyone who heard him was amazed at his understanding and his answers.

I noticed he listened, asked questions, understood, and answered.

Even with Jesus’s astonishing ability to understand things, he didn’t walk around boasting about his infinite wisdom, instead, he listened, engaged in conversation by asking questions, showed empathy through understanding, then participated with answers. The Holy Spirit tells me this order of communication is essential to access and understand the ways of the Father. And God is a God of order and not confusion.

Today, I am instructed to apply this simple yet effective communication style to all encounters I have in order to be about my Father’s business.

I moved to Step 5 since I had a question.

Step 5: Ask. Seek

The words that came to mind were:

  • Holy Spirit, if I am to apply this communication (listen, question, understand, answer) order to all my conversations today, how do I stay patient and apply this when the world moves so fast?

Step 6: Hear. Write. Receive

Here is the answer I received:

“You will be surprised at the reaction you get when you operate in this order today. You will have more than enough time. The enemy clouds your thoughts into thinking you should hurry, but as Jesus told even his parents, “Why did you seek me? Did you know I am about my Father’s business?” Mary took note that her son was different, doing a new thing and something special was happening. Those who have ears let them hear, those who have eyes let them see. This is the first of many steps you will take to discipline the flesh. Keep going, and be encouraged, knowing the victory awaits from honoring the teachings of Jesus even at a young age and being about your Father’s business.”

Step 7: Pray. Confirm

Heavenly Father, I come to you through my LORD and Savoir Jesus.

I pray for patience and order through every encounter, process, and predicament today. Help me to be about YOUR business, including emulating the master teacher in the flesh, Jesus. Let me continue to study him closer than ever before. Even in his youth. Let me only come to you in order, through him.

I ask this in Jesus’ Holy name - Amen!

Step 8: Share. Testify

If you workshopped any of the verses mentioned above using the 8-Step Prayer Practice, we would love to hear from you in the comments below about what the Holy Spirit showed or spoke to you today.

Remember to spread hope and share your miracle or testimony HERE. We want to see how God is working in your life!

Conclusion:

The message is clear and concise.

We must first learn the habits of Jesus to be about our Father’s business.

Be patient and apply these simple ways of communication today wherever you go: listen, ask questions, understand, and answer.

I am looking forward to what Jesus shows us tomorrow!

God bless!
