Zechariah 4:10 - Hold The Plumb Line

Step 1: Pray. Select.

As I sat today pondering what I would learn from the Holy Spirit, I thought about how, while we take tiny steps toward the LORD and his purpose for our lives, he is working behind the scenes and turning things in our favor and for our good.

I researched scriptures that focused on “doing tiny things” and what the Bible said about slow, steady progress in life.

I was led to Zechariah 4:10, where I began my journey today, friends.

Step 2: Write. Read. Circle

After reading the scripture three times, the following words stood out amongst the others:

Zechariah 4:10 - For who has despised the day of small things? For these seven rejoice to see the plumb line in the hand of Zerubbabel. They are the eyes of the Lord, which scan to and fro throughout the whole earth.

Step 3: Re-Write

With a focus on the words I circled that stood out, here is the personalized sentence that came alive in my heart.

  • Jennifer, smalls things, seven rejoice to see the plumb line, scene to and fro.

If you are doing this alongside me today, add your name in front of your unique sentence so the Lord can speak directly to you.

Step 4: Visualize

As I close my eyes and meditate on today's sentence, the Holy Spirit tells me to stay the course or keep the plumb line, which builds vertically toward God's goals.

In complete transparency, when I first read this verse, I didn’t fully understand the seven spirits of God and what they consisted of. I did some research and read through some commentaries to help me understand the seven spirits in more depth, but simply put, they are as follows:

  • Spirit of the LORD (intimate relationship with the LORD)

  • Spirit of Wisdom

  • Spirit of Understanding

  • Spirit of Counsel

  • Spirit of Might

  • Spirit of Knowledge

  • Spirit of the Fear of the LORD

The Holy Spirit revealed to me that this is the plumb line—the vertical trajectory after God’s heart.

I began to think about what it would look like to be tethered to the LORD. To have a sense that even as I do small things like praying in private daily, loving my husband and family, and obediently taking steps to use my spiritual gifting in all I do (even if no one is noticing), he hears me and knows me in those intimate moments of life. I am beginning to see through my prayer time and writing I am rebuilding my temple, or my body, mind, and spirit, in His order and excellence, even if it seems like a slow process or no one notices my work. I am building a new temple between Him and me. I will not lay one brick unless the seven spirits are fully embedded. This means paying attention at all times to the Holy Spirit. I need to build, but only if it is on God’s foundation or his principles, which happen in his timing. I need to not be swayed by circumstances or shiny objects telling me to take the fast track. I need to buckle down, stay close to his guidance, and build qualifying each layer and each step with prayer and confirmation.

My sentence says, “The seven rejoice” and “scan to and fro.” I feel the Holy Spirit telling me that the path I am on, though it may not be conventional, is His path. I am tethered to my Father, and he will ensure I am safe and all my needs are met.

Through the words “see the plumb line,” God commands me to always keep him in sight. Though I may wander away sometimes, he tells me not to go too far anymore. Keep the line in sight.

A question arises, so I move to Step 5.

Step 5: Ask. Seek

The requests/questions that came to mind are:

  • Holy Spirit, how do I know when approached with new opportunities and endeavors if these things align with your purpose for my life? How can I tell a distraction from an opportunity from you?

Step 6: Hear. Write. Receive

Here is the answer I received:

“You have grown closer to me through my word, and the more you are with me and spend time with me, the more you will be like me and know my ways. When things come into your life to distract you, your peace and patience are usually your first sign if I am not with you on that path. You hear me, feel my presence, and move in grace when I am with you. You will know I am there when you understand the seven spirits and associate them with anything you do. In this knowing, you can test if you should engage by measuring according to the seven spirits. Take hold of this new knowledge and keep building based on the approval of the seven. If so, you will be blessed in all that you build.”

Step 7: Pray. Confirm

Heavenly Father, I come to you through your son Jesus.

Thank you for imparting this new wisdom about how you work in the spirit. Please keep me tethered to you so I only build in a way that honors and pleases you. Please help me always remember this lesson and let no weapon form or prosper against what I build in your name.

I ask this in the mighty name of Jesus - Amen!
