Romans 12:16 - Humble Your Opinion
Step 1: Pray. Select.
I walked into my prayer time today completely overwhelmed with life. I felt heavy and hopeless. I have been trying to find a way out, but each day this week has chipped away at my faith a little more.
Not sure where to turn or what to do, I came across Romans 12:16, which seemed to offer a new perspective on how to overcome my state of mind.
Here is where I began my journey, friends. So I move to STEP 2.
Step 2: Write. Read. Circle
After reading the scripture three times, the following words stood out amongst the others:
Be of the same mind toward one another. Do not set your mind on high things, but associate with the humble. Do not be wise in your own opinion.
Step 3: Re-Write
With a focus on the words I circled that stood out, here is the personalized sentence that came alive in my heart.
Jennifer, toward one another, humble your own opinion.
If you are doing this alongside me today, add your name in front of your unique sentence so the Lord can speak directly to you.
Step 4: Visualize
As I meditate on the words in my sentence for today, I hear the Holy Spirit driving home the point that when life situations arise, we must exercise self-restraint with our mouths. We must humble ourselves not to yield to other people, but to yield to the will of your Father. It can become so easy to get overwhelmed and swept away by our emotions, and in turn, lose sight of the Lord, no matter what is transpiring, forgetting that He is good and still on the throne.
I picture Jesus as described in Isaiah 6:1, where He is seated high and lifted up on the throne, and the train of His robe fills the temple. Even in the midst of Him reigning, in my vision, He still takes the time to glance down at me with mercy as my emotions overwhelm me to tears over certain temporary circumstances going on in my life. He feels my pain. He has lived it before.
Where I feel helpless and confused, He looks down on me as if to say, with his eyes, ‘Dear child, all you have to do is look at me, and hand it over to me, and I will give you rest. What are you looking for that causes you such angst? I am right here.’ Since he asks, I will hop right into asking or communicating with him about what I am seeking.
I move to Step 5.
Step 5: Ask. Seek
The requests/questions that came to mind are:
Holy Spirit, I'm trying to fully walk out my assignment for today, but I'm overwhelmed. I feel like I can't breathe. And even though I'm surrounded by love and support from family and friends, I feel lost and alone in the wilderness. Can you please help me?
Step 6: Hear. Write. Receive
Here is the answer I received:
“Again, I say, look up. Let go. Hand everything over. I see you and can carry your burden. Because you humbly ask for my guidance and admit your truth, I am here to reassure you of my truth. Hand your fears, burdens, and weight over to me, and I will restore life inside of you. You must release the things holding you in bondage in order to make room for me and what I have for you. Stop looking down. Look at me. Do you not believe I have the power to move mountains? Do you not believe my word over the lies of the enemy? Do you not know my name? Call to me. Call until the earth shakes and the mountains crumble. Call my name and see if I am who I say I am. Don't look any further at your problems. Withhold from these things, and KNOW I see your situation. I am your solution. Humble yourself and call my name. I will command dominion over your life, but you must allow me to do so through your free will. Run to me. I wait for you with open arms and will destroy any living thought that pretends to exalt itself against me. I am the Most High, and there is no other beside me. Come to me so I can give you rest, knowing I came to give you life and life more abundantly.”
Step 7: Pray. Confirm
Heavenly Father, I come to you in the name of my Lord and Savior, Jesus.
Thank you for your strength today. Thank you for loving me and reminding me to leave everything at your feet so I can be filled with your peace and restoration, knowing that you are in control of my life and circumstances.
Help me to humble myself and come to you free of shame and condemnation over any of my shortcomings or weaknesses.
Help me to shut down any preconceived thought that is not in alignment with you and your will for my life.
Help me not to put myself in a jail of my own volition when you have set me free.
Though I walk through the valley, I shall not be afraid, for you are with me.
In Jesus' mighty name I pray, and I seal this prayer with the blood. Amen.

Most of all, don’t lose faith. He is with you and waiting for you with open arms. Come to Him, and he will give you rest.
